Bas-relief of a horse in the dark grey schist typical to the valleys of Gandhara situated in the northeast of Afghanistan, on the Pakistan border. Great expressiveness in the horse’s head, harness visible as well as a part of the mane gathered in a line on the top if its head. Well preserved fragment with no visible repairGreco-Buddhist Art of the Gandhara. The art of Gandhara, born on Indian soil and in the service of the Buddhist religion, uses iconographic elements drawn from that religion while employing Hellenist techniques. Introduced by Greek soldiers who came from Macedonia with Alexander the Great, this art never ceased to represent the horse in all its nobleness.
