Head of Buddha in a beige sandstone sculpted in the round. The face is somewhat rectangular, a single line of eyebrows highlight the almond-shaped eyes; the full, well-defined lips show the shadow of a smile surmounted by a moustache. The braided hair is drawn together in a high chignon decorated with pearls. The earlobes are elongated and marked with perforations as a result of wearing the princely earrings.

The first great capital of the kingdom of Siam was Ayutthaya until its destruction by the Burmese at the end of the 18th century. The capital was then moved to Bangkok. The Ayutthaya style forged its own refinement, derived from the influence of Sukothai and Khmer input. The influence of the Khmer style is incontestable in this Buddha head.
