Under the Roman Republic (509-27 BC) monetary magistrates, appointed by the consuls, struck the Roman coin. Choosing legends and monetary types, they conveyed a political message. These deniers represented the personification of the city of Rome, becoming a symbol of its power. Their flip side refers, for one, to the expected victory of the Romans over the Carthaginians during the Third Punic War (149-146 BC), and for the other to the legendary intervention of the Dioscures , Sons of Jupiter, during the battle of Lac Régille of 496-494 BC, a Roman triumph over the Latins and the Etruscans.
