Male and female couple modelled in orangey beige terracotta showing engraved details. Traces of black on their bodies and red colour is visible on the hands of the male figure. These flat figures are standing, their legs straight together and their arms symbolically intertwined across their chest. They have a rounded hairstyle, rectangular head, a pointed nose and the eyes and mouth are in the form of a coffee bean. They are both wearing earrings and bracelets and the female figure wears a necklace. Excellent state of preservation. Ancient signs of patina.
Three « shaft tomb » cultures developed on the northwest coast of Mexico in the late Pre-classic period around 300 B.C. Nayarit, Jalisco and Colima are known for their underground tombs reserved for high-ranking figures and composed of one or more burial chambers. These chambers were accessed by vertical wells up to 20 meters deep. And they were filled by numerous terracotta figurines such as these. They were specifically produced for funerary rituals and used to reproduce the forms of everyday life. This couple belongs to the ancient « Tuxcacuesco-Ortices style ».
