Stucco bust of clear beige clay. Buddha wearing a garment of soft folds characteristic of Greek aesthetics. His right hand hold a lotus flower presented as a bud. No visible repair. Many missing parts as visible. The back of the statue is flat. The piece is fixed on a base. Excellent piece with a very interesting symbolism.
The lotus flower is a symbol of virtue, purity and perfection. It is also the emblem of summer and of fertility. In Chinese, the word lotus is pronounced in the same manner as the word “year” and the word “child” which links it to continuity and prosperity. In Buddhism, the lotus represents the master, who is like the flower that floats on water and has its roots in the mud, symbol of human suffering on earth. In addition, for this religion, the fact that the seed of the lotus and the flower appear together is a symbol of the simultaneousness of the cause (the seed) and the effect (the flower) in the law of causality of the universe, which is one of the major concepts of Buddhist philosophy.
