Low-relief of a man’s profile in the dark grey schist typical of the valleys situated in the northeast of Afghanistan, on the border with Pakistan. Fragment of the face where we can see the Hellenistic influences typical to this region: a long, aquiline nose, an accentuated arch of the eyebrows, a large orbit of the round eye of which the pupil is in relief. The head is wrapped in a turban with folds, knotted on the side and revealing a beautiful ear and three curls of hair above the forehead. Four strands of wavy beard adorn the lower part of the face. Some traces of earth from the archaeological dig. Some scratches on the face.
The art of Gandhara, born on Indian soil and in the service of Buddhism, uses iconographic elements drawn from that religion while employing the Hellenist techniques introduced by Greek soldiers who came from Macedonia with Alexander the Great.
