Khanjar daggers originate in Persian tradition, particularly in Oman. They were worn in the belt for everyday wear in the countryside, but only for ceremonies in the cities. Manufacturing these characteristic knives takes more than artisanal skill – it calls for artistry in the purest sense of the term. Like the Omanis, the Indians have always taken this craft very seriously. When a man wants to acquire a knife, he will not be satisfied by a vulgar generic model – instead, he reflects deeply on it, imagines it, dreams about it, draws it, and discusses the quality of the blade with the craftsman. No Khanjar has ever been ‘just a knife’. Rather, it is a powerful symbol of belonging to a particular society and, in some places, a part of a man’s self.
