Female figurine flatly pressed in an orangey beige terracotta showing traces of black and red paint. Similar to the stylized « pretty lady » model of the Chupicuaro culture, this figurine has an oversized and angular head. The nose is pointed, the eyes are of a coffee bean shape and the mouth opens to reveal the teeth. Represented standing with outstretched arms and legs resting on arched feet. This figure is naked and wearing an ornately decorated necklace, ear studs and an undulated bandeau across the forehead. Excellent state of preservation. Traces of ancient patina.
Located south of Jalisco and bordered to the Northwest by the valley of Mexico, Michoacan is the territory on which the Preclassic culture of Chupicuaro extended. This culture influenced the artistic style and production of terracotta well beyond Michoacan until the 14th century. As worshippers of the cult of the dead, this culture is known for its figurines, most of which are female and symbolize the traditions of fertility. These were used during funerary rituals and placed in tombs (more likely of children) as offerings.
