According to Pliny the Elder (Naturalis historica, an 77) Phoenician sailors were the first to stumble upon glass on the Mediterranean beach when they discovered that heated soda blocks would vitrify on the sand. The first glass objects seem to have been Egyptian beads dating back to 2500 B.C., however the technique of glass blowing was invented by the Babylonians around 250 B.C. and only evolved slightly until the 18th century.
